Rationale for Changes
Canadian Red Cross First Aid & CPR Programs
Canadian Red Cross Rationale for Changes to First Aid and CPR Programs 2017.
In February of 2017, the Canadian Red Cross launched their updated First Aid and CPR programs, including CPR & AED courses, Standard First Aid courses, Emergency First Aid courses, Child Care First Aid courses, and Marine Basic First Aid courses. These updated First Aid programs included several significant changes to core First Aid and CPR skills being taught in Canadian Red Cross courses.
Some of the updates included changes to existing First Aid & CPR skills and principles, some First Aid skills and principles were removed entirely, while some of the changes included the addition of entirely new ideas, principles and First Aid skills. The First Aid and CPR course student manuals, support materials, and Instructor guides were also updated in accordance with the new guidelines.
The First Aid and CPR-AED skills and principles adopted by the Canadian Red Cross follow the guidelines from the most currently recognized International Liaison Committee on Rescuscitation (ILCOR) and Canadian Consensus on Science and Treatment Recommendations (CoSTR) recommendations.
To assist Canadian Red Cross First Aid and CPR Instructors with familiarizing themselves with these updated skills and principles, so they can deliver the First Aid program courses in a credible and consistent manner, the Canadian Red Cross published a notification titled "Rationale for First Aid Knowledge and Skill Changes."
